2023 Week 5 UP Fall Color Report
Slower change this week, going to be hot again
Welcome to week 5 of the 10th Annual UP Fall Color Report. This is the #1 place for information on the changes of fall across the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
Week 5 we have seen a little more color everywhere across the UP, but it is very dull in most areas. The reds have really started appearing along the swamps and wetland areas along the roads and in the backwoods along lakes. Color on the interior of the western UP is the best right now and some areas in the Keweenaw are really seeing some big changes now while other areas are still very very green. Most areas do have patches of color here and there so most who are looking can see the colors changing. I am afraid with the way the weather forecast looks this week it is going to hinder the color brightness even more, temps in the mid 80s are not what we want to see heading into September. I am not budging on my forecast for peak for the interior portions, but with a good rainfall in the next week we could see peak around the same time we did last year. Areas off Lake Superior shouldn’t be far off what last year peak color, so if you are planning a trip to the UP for fall color and are going to just want to drive where there is color you should find some great to decent color for a good 2 weeks stretch, but you may have to put on a few miles, don’t just plan on going to one place, take a drive and see a few more places, Head to a different area of the UP than you usually do, the UP is a big place, explore a little bit you’ll be glad you did.
