Did you enjoy the brief almost two weeks of warmer weather? How about that 60+ degree day last Saturday? I enjoyed that warmer day doing some photography and video work at Quartzite and Black slate falls last Saturday. I am on the mend with my knee as I slipped on some leaves on wet slate rock as a friend and I were heading out as it was getting dark. I laid there for about 20 minutes before I could gather myself to sit up on a rock. I was hoping that I was going to be able to limp out of there at least, limping back is what I did, for as much pain as I initially felt I was grateful I was able to do that. That night I iced my knee, took some ibuprofen, and also some roll-on pain therapy. I’m hoping that I may have just tweaked a ligament, probably the MCL, and at most I might have a minor acute meniscal tear. I should be fine, I feel a lot better, but I will take it easier for a few weeks while it heals.
Wow was today windy, still windy, wet snow moved out, rain moved northwest into New England and temperatures have really dropped in the last 24hrs. Winter is back!
It appears we are back on track to see snowfall most days through the winter now, I think that was the last big warm up we will see until March. We look to end the month of November with higher than usual snow totals on average across many snowfall stations in the Western, Central, and Northern Upper Peninsula. Most of the snow we gained on the ground got melted but most stations across these regions retained about 15%-25% of their high so far this season.
I have been looking at the ice coverage for Lake Superior and I did notice that we started seeing some ice coverage starting a little over a week ago. Today there is 0.11% ice coverage on Lake Superior and a total of 0.05% total ice coverage on the 5 Great Lakes. First ice was documented on Nov 26th with only 0.01% ice on Lake Superior. Here is the greatest ice percentage we have seen from Spring 2022 back to Spring 2014.
2022-79.55% reached on March 5th
2021-50.62% reached on Feb 19th
2020-22.56% reached on Feb 17th
2019-94.91% reached on March 8th
2018-77.11% reached on Feb 11th
2017-18.73% reached on March 4th
2016-22.70% reached on Feb 14th
2015-95.58% reached on Feb 28th
2014-95.74% reached on March 5th
As you can see we have seen 90+ percent 3x since 2014. If you recall the winter of 2013/14 was a very cold winter and we made national news due to the lingering ice along the shorelines as we saw ice into June.
Okay now on with the snowfall totals for today, you’ll find them below.
