Hello all, thanks for following the UP Snow Totals, we are off to a great start if you love snow and winter, as much as I like snow I do like fall as well, totally not really ready for winter yet. If you don’t like winter you will be happy to know that this weekend into Monday and Tuesday temps will get into the low 60s and possibly a few areas may see low 70s. So the next snowfall update probably won’t be for over a week maybe even two weeks, don’t worry I will have some other posts, there’s a lot to write about with the Upper Peninsula.
Most of the snow from Oct 16th and 17th fell along the central part of the Upper Peninsula from Ironwood to Covington Jct and areas along US41 from Alberta to Ishpeming and also in the Huron Mountains. This is typical of early snow across the UP, the warm waters of Lake Superior keep the shorelines and the Keweenaw Peninsula mild above the land and the ground is still very warm from the warmer than usual summer. To these snowfalls above 10 inches in the middle of October isn’t common, actually very uncommon, seeing them right around Halloween or the first week of November is fairly common, but to see them halfway through October is a bit unusual. On October 17th I took a ride out to Herman and did a live video on Facebook you can watch it here, then also did a live drive from Covington to around Sidnaw area.
Snowfall amounts should be about what they were last year across much of the Upper Peninsula so you should get those snow tires on and get your vehicles prepped up with the emergency supplies that will help you should you break down. I may do a post about what things to have in your vehicle for winter, maybe I will even do a video.
I’ll get more prompt on the updates for snow as I get my databases changed to make things a bit more smooth to update on substack. For the Daily UP Snow Totals I may just make a post here on Substack and not send a daily snow total email to your inbox, so you will just log into Substack and you can read every post easily online, also you can download the substack app and read the Yooper Report easily. I do plan on doing more posts through the winter on top of the daily snowfall updates so I don’t want to flood your inbox with to many emails.

If daily slot is 0" the station hasn't updated or recorded no snowfall.
Sometimes a station won't update that day and does the next day or even days later.
Tahquamenon Falls State Park only updates at the end of each month.
Keweenaw county and Houghton County Airport only update during the weekdays.
Sanderson Field Airport (Soo) updates next day.
Every year there seems to be a station or two that used to update that no longer does, or a new station pops up and starts updating, all stations are done by volunteers and no one gets paid to do snowfall totals from NOAA. Some people who used to measure pass away, move away, are physically unable to anymore, or just get tired of it.
I myself measure 6 snowfall stations around Houghton and Calumet that takes about 45 miles of driving and about 2 - 3 hours a day on top of updating snow totals for the daily update, anywhere from 4-5 hours daily doing snowfall not including any videos I do.
I’d love to see you as a paid subscriber, So I have a sweet offer of 25% off the yearly rate, that’s only $4.7/month, that’s about half the price of a burger at a restaurant.
