Overall Color Change - 75% - Peak-Past Peak-Leaf Loss
Fall colors drives have been wonderful this week. Overall it has been the best week for viewing colors.
Peak color arrived in some places 2 weeks ago and some areas just reached peak this week. Colors are fading quickly as they turn into dull oranges and crispy brown leaves and more and more trees shed their leaves with the winds and rain and as of last night and today we are seeing snow in parts of the Upper Peninsula.
It really doesn’t take long for peak to hit as many found out again this year. Year after year I tell people once you start seeing fall color starting to reach 65-75% it can be as quick as 4 or 5 days for peak to hit and this year wasn’t any different. Once we had 3 or 4 days of temps drop into the upper 30s and into the mid 40s it just snapped the colors overnight.
It was so dry and warm that fall color fooled everyone, people were enjoying the sunshine and 70s and 80s meanwhile the trees were starting to shut down chlorophyll production very slowly due to the stress from the above average temps and lack of rain.
If you aren’t already in the U.P. or haven’t already been up here then you should act quickly and take a ride, but grab your sweaters, winter hats, and long johns because it’s starting to feel a bit more chilly around these parts for the next few days. It will however get back into the low to mid 60s for the weekend so keep some short sleeve shirts around as well.
With the 11th Annual U.P. Fall Color Report coming to an end for 2024 I will soon be starting to do updates on the daily snow fall across the Upper Peninsula. Hopefully this year we get a good winter at least for those of use who enjoy some good snowstorms and who rely on winter tourism.
Hope you stick around and be sure to follow the reports this winter and other posts.
