Overall Color Change 40%-90%
I’ll start off by by saying don’t listen to the naysayers telling you there isn’t color in the U.P. and there are no areas of which have good color. You’ll get a lot of people who only look at fall color as being peak or past peak color. Also some people only visit one little area where the color hasn’t really started to really get above 50% so they will say, there’s no color it’s green yet, it will be 2 weeks before color arrives. Peak is arriving now and will be arriving for the next week to 2 weeks in spots so anytime between now and the next couple weeks will be great. Even after peak color the forests get colorful as the understory changes into that golden yellow and leaves start falling off the trees.
This week I am noticing a lot of people starting to post pictures of videos of the fall color all across the Upper Peninsula. Most people only start to get excited about the fall colors when the percentages start reaching about 50%. Myself I start getting excited about fall in early August when I start these fall color reports each year. The reason I start the reports so early is because it is important to stay aware of the color changes and weather as we head into peak color season. Color just doesn’t pop up it’s a slow process especially for the first 4 to 5 weeks of the report, after that color can pop or go slow depending on weather and rainfall.
I am glad you found this substack, here you will find the best source of color changes across the U.P. year after year. Thanks for reading and I hope you see some awesome fall color here in the Upper Peninsula this year.
Color is starting to peak this week.
The first peak fall color is now arriving this week in some of the Northern, Western, and Central Upper Peninsula. With peak fall color arriving, there is also a lot of places still that haven’t gotten into the 50% range yet and won’t be there until around this weekend. The detailed Fall Color Map in the paid member section along with the detailed written report will give you an idea where you can travel now for the best color and an idea when to head to your other favorite areas.
We have seen a big jump in color change this week, 10% color on the lower end with up to 40% jump on the higher side with peak color in areas this week.
Areas along Lake Superior and Lake Michigan have a bit to go, color is minimal, when I say minimal that’s around 35%. On the higher end we are at 90% color as of Monday in areas of Marquette, Baraga, and Houghton counties with a few places in Keweenaw, Ontonagon, Iron, Gogebic, Delta, and Dickinson, Alger, Schoolcraft around 50% up to 75% right now while other areas are still at 35% to 45% color change.
Views at Lake of the Clouds, Brockway Mtn, Mission hill, Millie hill, Sugarloaf, Mt. Marquette all have some time to go.
Keep in mind folks that this coming week we will be seeing high winds 35-45mph with gusts up to 50mph in places, so there will be a lot of leaf loss starting and those reds people like to see may be gone very quickly.
