As we are heading into the halfway point of December we have a bit more snow to bring up to averages across the Upper Peninsula. Temps today were in the low to mid 30s today. The snow was really really fine small crystals that didn’t add up to be much but made the roads a bit slick. Snow totals are still running ahead of last year by a little bit but on the ground totals are about where they were last year.
Some of you might have noticed that we are supposed to get a system coming into the UP that might bring us some decent snowfall amounts. From looking at the forecasts and models it looks a bit overhyped in the news, don’t expect anything to significant in the northern half of the Upper Peninsula on Wednesday or Thursday, the higher amounts should be in the lower half of the UP where the greater concentration of precipitation will be moving across, winds will be out of the s/se off Lake Michigan so that virtually cuts off the central and western UP from great snowfall amounts. It is about time that the southern UP and eastern portions of the UP get the snow, they do need a little as there is grass showing most places.

With any forecasts even a few days out during the winter the probability of snow totals holding is 50% if not greater than they don’t hold. Much of the reason why the NWS doesn’t put out snow totals until at most 2 days out from the day of the projected snow accumulation.
So if you are a snowmobiler don’t get to excited you won’t be seeing the UP with that monster storm yet this week.
