UP Snow Totals Dec 14th
Nothing-Burger Snowstorm, lake effect coming Sat and Sunday
Well, well, the storm that was forecasted by local media was pretty much a nothing-burger. It brought some rain, sleet, and wet snow, what a sloppy mess it was. On the last update on the 10th I was saying that it seemed to be over-hyped after doing a lot of research on the models and looking at the way it was progressing across the US from out west. Winter weather especially in the UP is hard to predict as many who have lived in the UP know. Lake Superior, our topography, and where we are located gives forecasting challenges for even the seasoned meteorologist. I think with social media now everything is amplified now and expectations are a bit higher from people as they think that with all the data and Internet forecasts should be better than they are. According to NOAA, “processing 2.8 quadrillion mathematical calculations per second around the clock, these computers — each about the size of a school bus — are the nucleus of weather and climate forecasting in the United States”.

We are pretty much on track on seasonal totals so there is nothing to worry about if you are into winter activities, winter has just started.
Snowfall outlook for this weekend looks to bring us back into some lake-effect snowfall with some NW winds Saturday afternoon into Sunday. Look for snowfall totals to be much what they were yesterday across much of the Upper Peninsula.
After this weekend snowfall outlook doesn’t look to good, only some light flurries here and there until the end of the month, after Christmas, which could be our next snowstorm.
