I have added last years snowfall to compare to this years snowfall so you can compare each station so I hope you enjoy that. You’ll notice many of the stations with more snow than last year at this time, and it looks to grow with the snow this week.
This week is Christmas week and it will be a Christmas that many won’t forget. It’s looking more and more like a crazy week of snowfall across the UP as the lake effect snow machine has really kicked in across the Copper Country and Huron Mountains region. We wind has dominated today dropping a good 4-6 additional inches this afternoon and evening across the Keweenaw.
Most of the UP besides the eastern UP will mostly see lake effect snow, western UP more than most, and the eastern UP will see a little lake effect and also it appears be impacted slightly by the system that is moving from the west all the way into New England this weekend. Basically if you are traveling anywhere from the central plains states and east you’ll be impacted by this winter storm system, so plan accordingly and follow the local NWS stations where you will be traveling.
So far the last 6 days at my Tamarack snow station I have measured 21.8 inches of snow. This is looking like an epic 10 or so days of big snow totals. I’ll be doing plenty of LIVE videos on facebook so you’ll want to make sure you’re notifications are set to see when they post.
For you snowmobilers the trails are getting better each day but do expect some areas of water and swamps are still not frozen yet and there have been instances this week with sleds having to be recovered full of mud. Be careful out there this week and New Years it tends to be one of the busiest weeks for snowmobiling in the Upper Peninsula. Stay off the ice also many aren’t frozen over yet enough to support snowmobiles.
