I’m not writing much on this post as it is late and need some sleep. As most of you know by now there is a big storm moving across the US right now. Here in the UP we will see mostly lake effect as winds shift NW to N Friday afternoon and gain strength with up to 55mph gusts expected. Traveling could get hairy through the day with blizzard conditions likely across the western UP where the heavier snowfalls will be. The eastern UP has started to see some of the system snowfall as the storm is moving east but it appears there won’t be much snow from the system snows across the east, look for more snowfall to come Friday night into Saturday with winds shifting out of the north bringing some nice lake effect dumps late Friday night into Saturday through the day. The western UP and the Huron mountains should see your highest snow totals into Friday and Saturday with some nice numbers coming out of the central UP also. The Keweenaw will continue to see the lake effect snow dumps that has brought 25-31 inches of snow the last week. Check out the updated snow totals and blizzard warnings by the NWS.
Tamarack loc took over the snowiest place in the UP yesterday and was just shy of hitting 100 inches for the season today. Tomorrow we might just see a bunch of stations hit that 100 inch mark. Will there be a station to unseat Ironwood #2 station in the greatest 24hr total for the season or will they keep it with 22 inches, we shall see, if there’s a storm to do that it’s this one.
Some news agencies were projecting 35+ inches, doubt that will ever happen, but it is possible, all my life living in the UP the most I have seen in a 24hr period was 25 or 26 inches about 10 years ago with snowfall rates of 4"/hr. The NWS Marquette office posted snowfall totals in the range of 12-24” across most of the western UP and that is more like it, with lake effect however it could be possible to see 30 inches. Lake effect snow likes to settle a lot and with the winds there will most likely be a lot of crystal breakdown as the snow adds up. Merry Christmas to all and safe travels.
