Well what a week if you love snow and winter. If you don’t you probably found it awful. This storm certainly didn’t disappoint with snowfall and winds. Despite the strong winds I could only confirm there was a blizzard at the Houghton county airport and Copper Harbor. On Dec 24th Houghton county airport saw winds maintain 35mph+ from 6am through 6pm with highest wind gusts reported of 70mph at 3pm. Further up the Keweenaw at Copper Harbor winds maintained 50mph+ with gusts up to 71mph. The blizzard started Dec 23rd 2pm and lasted until Dec 25th 2pm. I wish I could have went up that far but I was just to busy this week with it being near Christmas and the travel time just wouldn’t allow it, I missed out on some great video and photos I know, but maybe next time I can document it. I did get some footage around Houghton and Calumet on the night of the 23rd with the strong winds and drifts forming.

We didn’t see any stations break the 22inch mark which still holds as the highest 24hr snow total out of Ironwood #2 on Nov 17th, still a lot of winter left but that is a big number so we need more storms like we just had before that happens. During the last couple days we have seen a handful of stations join the 100 Inch Club, you’ll see those stations marked in the data table below. You’ll also notice now that many stations have pulled ahead of last years season totals now with the last week of snowfall. First station to hit the 100 inch mark was Tamarack loc on the 22nd, then Ironwood on the 23rd, then more stations joined it with today’s snow measurements.
Winds made measurements difficult especially on the 24th with the strongest winds we have seen all season. Areas where wind was greatest in the Keweenaw probably prevented the snowfall totals from being higher as the winds really whipped around destroying the crystal structure of the snow as it falls and blows. What can you do though you can only do the best you can to estimate when needed taking measurements in places you wouldn’t normally measure to try and get the best possible. Nothing is 100% in snowfall measurements though, unless you were sitting at the snow station 24hrs a day and measuring every 10 minutes you won’t get the actual snowfall ever with the settling and sublimation, that occurs. Most snowfall observers are on a 24hr schedule and you can imagine the amount of settling that occurs during that time, especially with light lake effect snow that we so often see in the UP. With system snowfalls the crystals are made of more rounds and needle flakes than beautiful dendrites that really stack up with lots of air between flakes.
This storm was good for all the winter sports enthusiasts, the ski hills have plenty of snow to open, the snowmobile trails have lots of snow to cover wet spots and rough areas, and those who love to snowshoe can hike amidst the snow covered trees.
This week looks to be a bit more relaxed with just a few flurries and no major storms it appears, looks to be just a little lake effect snow.
