Back to winter after a brief warm up the last couple weeks, you could really feel it today with temps getting into the low teens and those cold N/NW winds whipping across your face. Today’s snowfall amounts was the snowfall that fell last night but most of it came in the early morning hours before the morning measurements were taken. The lake effect snow bands just started moving in early morning and continued through into the evening hours so I am expecting to see a bit higher snow measurements for tomorrows report.

There have been some snowmobile clubs out grooming in the western UP but they are running into a lot of downed trees and lots of standing water that hasn’t frozen up yet. Grooming will be a bit tough until we see a good week or so of colder temps with a good 12+ inches. If you are visiting Houghton and on your sled, you won’t be able to cross the Portage Lift Bridge until around Dec 15th or possibly later depending on snow conditions. Also right in Houghton on Trail 3 at Kestner Park the bridge is out crossing the Huron Creek as some construction work is being done so you won’t be able to get into Houghton right now on your sled without trailering it if you are coming from South Range.
Cross country ski trails took a hit as well this last week, although today there was a little light snow to sit on top of that hard crust that made for some decent xc skiing considering how crusty it was just yesterday. Groomers won’t be laying tracks for awhile until we get some good snow dumps so just enjoy skate skiing or classic without the tracks.
Start looking for more regular updates now that we are into December, it is probably gong to be another 270+ inches in the Copper Country/Keweenaw and possibly Ironwood may even see a 250+ inch snowfall season. The eastern UP and central UP areas are above average or at average snowfall so we shall see how they shape up this season.
