UP Snow Totals Dec 9th.

Well that didn’t go as expected, 50-75% less snowfall than forecasted across the Western UP even with a day out notice. That’s how winter weather forecasts go here across the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, we truly live in a unique weather environment. Every 7-10 years you have a couple years where snow is below average and temps are above average for much of the winter, it is just the cycles of the weather.

I wouldn’t be surprised if w are able to see grass across much of the UP on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, maybe even heading into 2024. It was in 1996 or 1997 I was flying back from Virginia to Houghton on Christmas Eve, I remember putting on my winter coat as we were arriving and then stepping off the plane and it was like it was late spring. Bare ground everywhere and temps in the 60s if memory serves me right. That night we saw a light dusting of snow to give us a white Christmas.
This is going to hurt the small businesses that depend on snowmobilers, xc skiers, and other winter enthusiasts visiting the Upper Peninsula.

Love your reports. I’ve been up every week in Three Lakes area and cannot believe this winter. We have more snow on the ground in Gaylord. So strange!
