UP Snow Totals Feb 12th and snow forecast
More very light fluffy snow, 2 stations now in 100 Inch Club
Some very light fluffy snow, it settles really quickly when it’s light lake effect snow that we have had the last 4 days. This won’t add much if anything to snow cover that will be significant enough to add to the snowmobile trails. Hopefully these windy days coming up Thursday will kick in the lake effect snow, but what I am seeing in the data it won’t be much, maybe 3-4 inches at most.
Check out the GFS Kuchera 78hr snow forecast run. Southern and eastern UP look to see the most snow over the next few days and higher elevations in Baraga and Marquette counties.
So what is happening Thursday and into the weekend, let’s take a look.
So a clipper will be moving in Wednesday bringing some cold air to the region but with the weak forcing we shouldn’t see much precipitation with snow amounts not much more than an inch.
Next it appears a weak Colorado low is starting to move across the plains bringing more cold air and winds, a bit of uncertainty in models, my guess is it will stay pretty south in the UP to impact us much. There isn’t much snow forecast for the eastern and southern UP, only 2-4 inches, that’s if it doesn’t get pushed further south.
Behind this cold front we could see some 850mb temps of around -11C bring in some lake effect snow to the NW snowbelts into the weekend but it’s a bit to soon to get a fix on this, give it a couple days. Winds could shift westerly which would cut off any chance of lake effect in much of the UP except the Keweenaw, much like what happened in the middle of January. Accumulations I have as a questionable amount for this weekend are 3-4 inches in the NW snowbelts.
Let’s check back the next couple days and see what this clipper and Colorado low brings us and if there’s any changes in low pressure system that is over Alaska right now as it swings down into the Great Lakes area early weekend.
We are doing some flip flopping in that a polar air mass or Pacific air mass moves in next. For those who love snow let’s hope for another Polar air mass.
