Well February hasn’t been much better for snowfall than last month. There is still another week left of this month and with the Thursday snowstorm we could move to about even with last months total with another week left before the month closes out.
Today we did see our first station join the 200 inch club, a few more are close behind with another 25-35 inches to go on a couple of them. This time last year most stations are running behind, last year we saw a storm on the 21st, 22nd, 23rd, some stations saw 15-30 inches those three days.
Lake Superior is wide open for the most part with only 7.29% ice as of tonight’s update. We are still in the coldest period (historically) across the UP so there is still time to see ice grow, but don’t look for thick ice coverage, much of the ice in L’Anse Bay broke up the last few days, not a safe time to be out there ice fishing.
Snowmobile trails, ski hills, and xc ski trails got some much needed powder to cover up that crusty snow and with the new snow on the way Thursday should be a welcome sign to businesses that need winter recreation tourists.
