Well it is about time to wrap up the month of February, already 2 months into 2023. With the days getting longer the chances of snowfall decrease daily, but as we all know we will see some decent snow totals yet, so don’t put away your snow shovels and snow brush yet.
Today we had another station join the 200 Inch Club, that was Keweenaw county snow station up near Central. It joins Tamarack location as the only 2 stations to reach the 200 inch mark so far this season, I am sure there will at least be 2 or 3 more before the season is over.
I can saw however that February numbers as of today are looking a lot like last months totals, pretty much the same amounts as last month with some a little more and some about the same and some a tad bit less. We still have tomorrow’s snow measurement to round on the month (snow that fell on Feb 28th today). I can say that I am really getting excited to see some warmer weather and I would really like to see those snowbanks disappear by mid March but I know that most likely won’t happen, maybe by early April most likely especially if we get a few good snowstorms in March.

I was looking at the ice concentration data and tonight ice coverage on Lake Superior is at 11.78%. Average ice coverage for Feb 28th since 1973 is 41.53% so you can see that we are on the low side by a lot from the average. Ice concentration from Feb 13th to March 8th the average ice coverage is in the 40 percentile, so on most years the greatest ice coverage takes place during these 24 days.
Snow doesn’t look likely most of the week with temps in the low to mid 30s for most days this week, it does appear however that Wednesday afternoon we could see 1-2 inches. This is usually the time of the year now where snow totals start spreading out a bit with the longer days and warmer days arriving.
Copper Dog 150 is coming to Calumet this weekend, with Friday the biggest day of them all, that is the start of the race where a couple thousand people from the community and outside come to see the sled dog race. It appears that temps will be a bit higher than the racers and the dogs like, but it is what it is, although during the evenings when some of the race happens the temps will be lower as darkness sets in. If you get a chance to it is a fun event to at least attend once in your life. I have attended most of them since the first one in 2010.
Below are the snow totals for Feb 27th.
