I was able to borrow a vehicle so I could measure my snow stations and join my hiking group for a hike Sunday it was nice to be out, been a little stir crazy since January 21st when my Expedition engine blew up. Still working on getting another vehicle to replace it.
The cold and snow have returned but not expecting anything big for the next 5-7 days. Our best chance to see any significant snowfall will be between Feb 21-25th. With the lake being wide open we will still see light snow every few days through the end of the month. Temps haven’t dipped a lot but enough for the snow to get crusty.
Calumet Tamarack snow station is the first this season to join the 100 Inch Club on Feb 9th. Keweenaw county snow station will be the next to reach 100 inches probably with tomorrows snow update. Next stations to reach 100 inches will be Calumet lake, Herman, and Painesdale snow stations.
We are still 50% to 80% below last years snow totals across the UP. This year has been a wash for many businesses. This may just be one of our lowest snow seasons in the last 20 years, but we will wait until the season is over to see.
Snowmobiling was pretty decent for 10 days in the middle of January when the Keweenaw saw 70 inches of snow, elsewhere across the UP hasn’t been very good most of the year. The Keweenaw is more rideable now with the 3-5 inches of snow we saw the last couple days to cover up some of those few bare spots. Don’t expect the conditions to be awesome but on scale of 1-5, I would give it a 1.5 rating.

I joined friends for an adventure on Sunday to Horseshoe Harbor, we hiked there, usually we cross country ski there. The shoreline was ice free and you could pick rocks which is pretty crazy. Lake effect snow started moving in while we were out there and winds picked up making it a bit chilly. I will write about this hiking adventure this week sometime.

Horseshoe harbor looks beautiful in the winter. I have been there a couple times in the summer. Climbed up on top of the big outcrop. That was fun! Thanks for the report. I hope you get a vehicle soon.
