After a prolonged period of just a few inches of snow, over two weeks of significant snowfall we saw the central and eastern Upper Peninsula get hit with a quick moving storm pulling moisture from the southern states. Western UP and Keweenaw didn’t see but an inch or two.
The snow station Engadine Mdot will reappear on the next update, it appears after not updating the entire season they have loaded data from the start of winter, not sure why it hasn’t been updated but it is now. There is another station I have for Engadine which I have been listing daily, but the Mdot station is showing about 10 inches more for the season than that station. Let’s hope that the station updates a bit frequently once again.
With the warm weather and rain that we have seen the last 10 days the snowfall on the ground dropped a good 5-10 inches and made things really sloppy out there on the snowmobile trails. Most citizens enjoyed the warmer weather and not having to shove snow which is always a nice break after a rough week of weather, but for those who love winter and rely on winter for their incomes with snow removal or snowmobile traffic then you want as much snow as we can get.
Ice on Lake Superior is only at 3% which is super low for this time of the but we are now approaching the historically the coldest period of the year and ice coverage could add up quickly with a few weeks of sub 20 degree temps and little wind.
Short term 6-10 day precipitation outlook looks to be about 40% chance and longer term 8-14 days it looks even more bleak with 0% chance. As we all know that when we have Lake Superior and Canada just to our north and northwest anything can happen.
Let’s hope for some decent snowfall until the early part of March then we can start seeing that sunshine and wishing for spring.
