Above: heading out to measure my 6 snow stations, January 30th.
Well, well, it seems the snowfall is back in the Upper Peninsula, at least in the Keweenaw Peninsula. Yes the rest of the U.P. got left out of this storm. This storm came as a bit of surprise for most people. In reality it is just another day in the UP, especially the Keweenaw, the snowiest region of the Upper Peninsula year after year.
This January snow totals may go down as one of the lowest ever recorded across many snowfall stations, but I guess we will figure that out in a few days, still a couple more days for the snow to add to the month’s totals. If you look at this years snow totals and compare it to last years totals for the snow stations you will see some about equal, some lower and some higher. Overall YTD snowfall totals are about a normal winter in most regions of the UP, it is just that we saw a few good storms early on in October and November that it has made it feel winter should be over already. Fact is that it isn’t until mid to late April that we usually see our last snow flurries in the UP. It isn’t unusual that we see some snow flurries in May and up to Mother’s Day, but by this time the on the ground snow has all but disappeared from all but the dark areas of the forests.

With the recent cold snap ice coverage on Lake Superior has since doubled from about 5 days ago now up to 6.27% with the ice on the Great Lakes at 8.81% as of the update today. Last year today however the ice coverage on Lake Superior grew to a quick 24.22% with the Great Lakes seeing 39.01% ice. We need to see some serious cold temps over the next two weeks to catch up to those numbers. Last year the highest percentage of ice on Lake Superior was on March 5th with a percentage of 79.55%.
