UP Snow Totals Jan 6th
Winter here to stay, big snow and below avg cold coming soon.
Winter is here to stay.
Hope everyone had a wonderful first full week of 2024!
Today felt like we are going to get back into the groove of winter, something about today just gave me the confidence what snow on the ground across the snow belts of the UP will stay with us until late March into the middle of April at least. All depends on how much snow we see for the next 4-6 weeks, ground is still warm and freeze lines aren’t but a couple inches at most right now and with the blanket of snow don’t see the ground freezing to deep unless we really get some sub zero temps in February. We do have some colder weather arriving mid January, more on that below. Lake Superior is still wide open right now, on our hike today we were able to pick rocks from the shoreline and there was barely any ice built up along the shoreline. Below I posted the current and past ice data for the Great Lakes along with the CPC temp outlook.
Bergland drops out of the #1 position today giving it back to the Soo, it appears the Soo will stay that way for this coming week with more snow out east than in the west of the UP.

Looking at the latest CPC outlook for the middle of the month we can see temps look to drop below normal for the period of Jan 15th-Jan 21st, this means two things, 1. Lake effect snow, and 2. below freezing temps and wind chills arriving soon. The Polar Vortex breakup appears to be coming, just as the next big storm that I am keeping an eye on for around the 15th either side should be arriving.
We need the snow and cold, I mean after all we have had a above average beginning to our 6 month winter season in the UP with 4 more to go. If you just moved to the UP you’re about to find out what a UP winter is usually like. A typical UP winter isn’t what we have experienced so far, if you don’t like snow, you won’t like the UP, you have to embrace winter to live here year-round.
Anyway folks, this week will be mild for the most part, Monday should be a chill day, no snow other than a few flurries possible and maybe some freezing rain. Tuesday should get a bit snowier especially for those in the southern and far eastern areas of the UP, maybe some southern Marquette and Alger counties may be in for a little snow as well 4-6 inches, some possible 7-8 inches aren’t out of the question. Western and Keweenaw areas should stay relatively snow free with only about an inch and at most 2 inches.
