Above: Tibbets falls - 3.23.25
We have our first station in the 300 Inch Club as of today’s snowfall, and tomorrow we might have another reach that milestone. Only two other stations have a small chance to reach the 300 Inch Club, but that’s going to get harder as we move forward into spring and it warms up. We can see just as much snowfall in April as March some years so I won’t count them out yet.
The snowstorm arrived Sunday as forecasted and dumped another 5-15 inches across the Keweenaw, Western UP, and some areas near Paulding and Watersmeet. The higher elevations from Twin Lakes to Calumet to Central saw the higher 10+ inch snowfall totals. Snow was heavy and wet, heart attack snow, usually that’s that type we see this time of year. My snow stations in the lower elevations in Dollar Bay, and 3 around the Houghton area it was very wet snow and my two stations in Calumet had a bit lighter snow.
Today while I was out and about I heard a lot of people complaining about the snowfall, most were sick of it and ready for it to be done for. I was starting to feel that way especially with the extended warmup we saw, you get used to the warmer temps and start to not miss the snow once that happens. The fresh snowy scenes make it a bit better and enjoyable and it provides a lot of photographic opportunities.
I really enjoyed the hike out from camping trip along the North Country trail on Sunday, a fresh 4 inches fell in the time we started the hike to arriving back at the vehicles, so about 2 inches an hour snowfall rate. It really was like a live Christmas card with the fresh white snow on the trees and ground along with the chocolate waters raging on the Sturgeon river with spring snow melt. Tibbets falls was really flowing but it wasn’t at full flow yet, but still pretty powerful. Wait until we really start seeing that snow melt how powerful the waterfalls will be across the Upper Peninsula. I will be doing a write up at some point on this adventure with pictures and some video as well so stay tuned in the near future.
