The storm arrived and dropped about what I was projecting across the Keweenaw. With the winds and light snow it made it difficult to see the roadways on the upper elevations where the snow squalls were more intense especially early on last night. Snow dropped off pretty fast into the morning hours with just a few stray flurries by time of snow measurements.
I saw a handful of snowmobilers out on the trails today and a few trailers at hotels but not many, snowmobile trails close that are on private property at the end of the month. I wouldn’t say that the trails are in excellent shape but they are ok, especially from Greenland to Calumet. Just before this last week everywhere was dirt, rocks, swamp, and mud. Eastern UP trail clubs aren’t recommending anyone to come up, nor are any western UP trail clubs. In the Keweenaw trails aren’t groomed and won’t be anymore, so what snow is on the trail have at it but can’t vouch for anything other than about 5-8 inches of fresh packed snow on the trails.
Note: you can’t cross the Portage Lake Lift Bridge anymore gates are up now, also the sidewalk from Kestner park to the bridge has been scraped of snow by the city.
Only other area besides the Keweenaw to see anything more than a few traces of snowfall was the Ironwood area, most of what they saw was early on last night with the NW winds, after that their snow totals dropped off as west winds took over.
There are currently 11 snow stations with at least 100 inches of snow in the Upper Peninsula, but get this last year at this time there were 41 stations at 100 inches or more. Just goes to show you how little snow we have really had. You will see those stations highlighted on the snowfall totals.
In the snow totals I have also noted the percentage behind last years snow totals each station is, some of them are 60% behind last year with many 30-50% and some even in the 70% + behind.
There is still some time to catch up, but we had a decent amount of snow in April last year at some stations, so we shall see how the year ends compared to last year.
Well I’ll get in a few more weeks of xc skiing it looks like, I did go out on Sunday and probably again this Sunday.
Also happy that we have a bit more water going to be flowing down the rivers for some good waterfall flow in the next week or two as the snow melts.
Forecast ahead isn’t looking to active for snowfall other than a few flurries Saturday and early on in April but that system looks to stay a bit south of the UP right now.
UP Snow totals March 27th below.
