You’ll notice the snow stations listing looking a little different, instead of text I have updated a graphic with the data. I will see how this works out, so far I like it as I have to do less typing to bring the update which will allow me to get these updates out sooner, I have been working on the database the last few days, as things work a bit differently here on substack than they do on funintheup site with the snow totals. Let me know how you like it.

Winter has come in like a lion across much of the Upper Peninsula, this isn’t unusual but I think it may have caught some off guard that we would see as much as we have up to today, much of it has fallen the last 7 days. Rifle deer hunting opened this week and I think first off the hunters liked the snow as it makes it easier to track but now it is getting a bit much to get in and out of deer camp, this is much like in 2018/19 November when there was 40-65 inches of snow.

Today we saw the temps drop into the low teens across much of the Upper Peninsula and the wind really picked up today bringing low visibility on the roadways along with lake effect snow squalls moving through. The driving conditions even though the snow is blowing a bit more they are better than a week ago when it first really started snowing as the snow was wet and sticky which along with the warm ground make for some slick roadways and lots of people found themselves in the ditch and having problems climbing the steeps hills.
For your snowmobilers out there, there is good news out of the Gogebic county snow club, as there looks to be a re-route on trail 2 from Wakefield to Bessemer bypassing the property which got blocked by Snow River Resorts. Many people worked hard to get this trail done, a few final terms are being solved but it looks like it might happen just in time for the trails to open on Dec 1st and with the recent snowfalls many are itching to get on their sleds. For you cross country skiers, trails around Houghton, Calumet, Ironwood are already seeing many xc folks out enjoying the fresh snow. Most trails haven’t laid tracks yet and only have been rolling. Get out there and enjoy some early season conditions. I will be out tomorrow hitting the trails for the first time this season myself.
