Video Western UP 9.18.22

color this week has started to pop with cool nights

Thanks for being a subscriber, here’s a little special video just for you. I will be doing more of these types of things just for subscribers here on Substack. I am working on another video from this last weekend of my camping adventure and the hikes and drives to bring you week 8 fall color report.

I was out adventuring last night (9.23) looking at fall color progression in the L’Anse area was thinking of heading to Marquette area but I’m glad I didn’t. I had a tie rod pop out of my vehicle, luckily it wasn’t while I was on the highway, it happened while I was in the backwoods on a two track going 5 miles an hour. I managed to limp it back 2 miles to a more traveled two track where it completely came out and I was now stuck. I messaged a few mechanics I know on ideas and Internet was spotty, so I was thinking I might be camping out in the Expedition or making a shelter in the woods and build a fire, perfectly fine with all that but…I wasn’t there to much longer and I saw a guy (Jeremiah) driving up and I flagged him down. It just so happened he had changed his mind on a drive he was going to do and came out on the road I was on instead, and fat chance that he lived close by and was able to get to his place for some stuff to gerryrig it and his friends garage as well. Some large hose clamps were used to hold the tie rod down, then some thick bailing wire was used to wrap around the tie rod and hopefully keep it tight enough yet giving enough movement for the wheels. NOTE: this is not a permanent fix, it was meant to limp back to safety, do not do what I did, get your stuff fixed and towed if needed.

Got back in did some tests on the turning and it had enough for more wider turns without snapping through the wire. I drove down the two track back to pavement and felt confident to drive back to Houghton, yes I did stop about 5 times checking to make sure things still looked they weren’t comprised underneath. Made it back, and now it is into the garage early next week. Looks like I will be back on the road with the Explorer this week until the Expedition can get repaired then will be putting the Explorer in the garage for a few repairs and inspection before winter arrives. More adventures coming soon. Thanks again for being a subscriber.
