Welcome to Week 3 of the 10th Annual UP Fall Color Report brought to you by me, Yooper Steve of FunintheUP.com.

Well this week I think progressed a little more than I thought it would. I am now noticing color almost everywhere now. I can really start to see the yellows starting to really come out in the leaves in the maples and birch are getting yellow but looking crispy. We have a lot of time left before peak but the way the weather is looking this next week it isn’t putting the UP in good position for a colorful fall season at this time, but have no fear, a good week of warm days and cool nights with a couple inches of rain could really help save this color season. Right now we are ahead of last year and the previous year in color progression, I would say right now about 7-10 days ahead of last year. Believe it or not we can actually regress, especially those maples with the yellow hues just starting. Those trees with leaves that have oranges and reds appearing there’s no turning back after the trees decide they’ve had enough, they won’t make more chlorophyll.
Fall is coming, but the heat is on for this week with temps reaching almost 90 degrees across the Upper Peninsula, this will really get the leaves even more crispy than they already are, not good for fall color, plus we will see some pretty hefty wind gusts as well. Stay tuned closely for updates this could be an early peak color season.
