No snow station reached 100 inches of snow by the end of January. The closest station was at my Calumet Tamarack snow station with 98.7 inches. A post I made here on Substack on December 18th in the post I predicted that there wouldn’t be a place in the UP to see 95-100 inches of snow, so I guess that was pretty much true. Not having any station in the UP to see 100 inches by the end of January is pretty sad, but not surprising with the low December snowfall.
The greatest December snowfall was Herman with 14.3 inches. Most places were lucky to see 5-10 inches for December.
Our January snowfall wasn’t to far off averages especially in the Keweenaw where Keweenaw county station saw 68.8 inches of snow and Calumet Tamarack station had 69.6 inches of snow. Places like downtown Houghton saw 41.8 inches and Painesdale saw 57.8 inches. The NWS Marquette office recorded 47.2 inches for January which is more than average for that station by about 10 inches (1965-current year).
Yesterday felt more like a late March afternoon with mid 40s and low 50s in some places on Jan 31st. We saw warm temps continue into the mid 40s today the first day of February 2024. One of the warmest if not the warmest was in Copper Harbor with 46°, with warm waters of Lake Superior it’s not much of a surprise that our temps hit the 40s. Yesterday we also saw a day filled with sunshine then ending with a beautiful orange and pink sunset.
I am currently working on the next UP Adventure post which I hope to have ready sometime this late weekend or early next week.
I am still without a vehicle, hoping to get a few more donations to bring it up a bit, everything I am seeing out there is pure junk, lots of very rusty SUVs that need lots of work. If you would like to donate on GoFundeMe with a few dollars that would help a lot. I am so thankful to all of you who have donated so far every dollar helps. If I can get a vehicle before the next storm that would be awesome so I can get back to doing LIVE videos and in the field snow reports. If I have to I’ll go out on my e-bike to get a few videos at least, I can’t miss documenting a good snowstorm.
You can also book your summer or fall 2024 UP Tour with me at UpperPeninsulaTours.com for an Epic Adventure across the UP.

I want to thank each and every one of you that are paid subscribers. It is because of you I have been able to continue doing these snow reports these last two winters and am able to put gas in the vehicle to continue measuring snowfall at my 6 snow stations through the winter. Granted right now I don’t have a working vehicle as of Jan21st but hopefully soon I’ll be able to afford a decent used SUV that will last for a few years at least.
Ok now onto the winter outlook for the next couple weeks. I’ll keep it real simple, I like simple.
If you’re looking for snow, you’ll have to wait another 10-12 days. There will be a few flurries here and there, but overall the next 7 days will be pretty dry.
Chances of precipitation increase as we get closer into the middle of the month with all the storms coming in off the Pacific.
Here in the UP, around the 8th and 9th we might see a little rain before things cool off in the following days where we should see some snow moving in.
We have some higher probabilities of above average precipitation from the 8th to the 15th. During this period is when our next snowstorm could arrive here in the UP. I’m leaning towards about the 13th-15th.
There is a lot of moisture coming in across the US from the Pacific Ocean bringing with it some good storms to the West and Rockies. We probably won’t be affected by that much here in the Upper Peninsula. Look for areas along the West Coast and to the Rockies to see 1-2 feet of snow in the next week. Southern US should see a few good thunderstorms as the storm system moves eastward and meets the Gulf moisture bringing some possible flooding to areas in the far south. Eastern US may also see some snowstorms mid week to next weekend.
Overall there really isn’t much to get excited about here in the Upper Peninsula for winter weather in the immediate future. If you’re into a super snowy winter then these warmer temps and lack of snow is probably ok for you. Myself I like a good snowy winter. Winters like this usually end up giving us more late season winter weather into mid April and even into early May.
